ART TRIP
In late January 2015, the 5th and 6th year classes went to Dublin to pay a visit
to the “Trove” exhibition by Dorothy Cross in the Irish Museum of Modern Art
(IMMA).
The exhibition was intriguing, as the artist, rather than presenting her own
work, juxtaposed several pieces from other galleries and museums to create
an interesting mix of media and concept. The artefacts and other items in the
exhibition ranged from shark teeth to an old armchair. One room was filled
with busts and whale skeletons in the centre, with several other pieces, such as
a black and white portrait of the writer Samuel Beckett, hanging on the walls
and tiny watercolor portraits in a cabinet. The exhibition featured two interactive
computer screens with information about the objects and the security guards
in each room knew about the items that were on display and were keen to
answer any questions we had. Overall my classmates and I thoroughly enjoyed
the exhibition as it gave us an interesting look at the various types of artwork
available throughout the country, presented in one place.
We also visited the National Museum of Ireland, which was also fantastic and
insightful. Within the museum my classmates and I saw several ancient artefacts
from our art history course, which we all found incredibly interesting. The whole
experience, in my own opinion, was very humbling, being able to look at Ireland’s
history in the form of beautiful pieces of craft was genuinely exciting.
