A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

What is the Royal School Cavan? This is a question which
has many answers. To the student who comes in, it is firstly
a place of education and learning. To the teacher, it is a
place where knowledge is created and shared among the
school community. To the houseperson, it is the challenge
of providing a homely atmosphere for those who may not
be keen to be away from home. To a member of a board, it
can be ensuring that the best is provided in the school. And
for the parent, a safe environment for their child to grow and
develop is always high on the list of priorities.
Recently, I spent some time considering the importance
of faith in secondary schools. This has been prompted by
a number of events, especially the possible effects of an
Admissions Bill to a school such as the Royal School Cavan.
While there might be concerns what such a law might bring, this time also allowed to consider what
is important about faith in the lives of the people in the school. Our Mission Statement speaks of a
Christian ethos, but what does that mean in practice? Any study of the Gospels shows the importance
of traits such as tolerance, forgiveness, compassion and support of the weak. Therefore, these must be
seen in the life of the school, or else the Mission Statement has little meaning.

As you turn the pages of this publication, you will see and read of the many activities and achievements
that have occurred in the school over the last 12 months. I would like to congratulate all involved,
including the magazine team that has worked so hard to bring this together. But I would also wish
to thank everyone who has gone out of their way to help others during this time, the vast majority of
which is not recorded. It is this daily living with a Christian love and concern for others that marks out
the students of the Royal School Cavan as special people, and must be encouraged and enhanced to
ensure that the school continues to be a place of welcome for all who walk in its doors.

                                                                            Mr. Edward Lindsay.
