Chess Club
“Chess is the gymnasium of the mind”
Our second year of chess club has almost come to an end and we have
done so much in the space of a year. Happily we have gained many new
members this year, mainly to do with the great number of first years that
have joined the school. The club now has around 25 members; from 1
st
year to 6 year.
th
During the year we had our very own junior chess tournament. Toluse
Akinlabi and I (both senior members) organised it. There was great
enthusiasm amongst our members and this enthusiasm grew as the
final drew nearer. The junior tournament winner was Liam Smith and
the runner up was Charlie Cosnett. They both received a small prize. Well
done Liam and Charlie.
On the 14 of March, four players
th
attended a “ChessZ” chess tournament
in Dublin, in the Green Isle Hotel. The players, Tolayo Alkinlabi and Toluse
Akinlabi, Emmeline Cosnett and I, played five rounds one match each
round. The secondary schools that also attended were Sligo Grammar
and St Kieran’s from Kilkenny just to name a few. There was a great turn
out of both junior and senior pupils.
At the end of a long day, we all had played very well and overall came
5 out of 10 teams. We were absolutely delighted with this result and
th
had a great day participating.
We must thank Mr Robertson for allowing us to use his room every
Tuesday lunch time. Also, we must thank him for overseeing the chess
club for the last two years and for his help and encouragement.
I have enjoyed being part of the Royal school chess club and wish
them well in the future.
