A week of Bowling

This year as part of “Ten Pin Bowling Week” a number of bowling alleys opened their doors to the local schools. To help
promote this the students of The Royal School Cavan agreed to participate in this initiative.

 A Taste of Cavan

A Taste of Cavan was an initiative run by the Cavan County Council to promote specialty foods in Co.
Cavan. It was held in the Kilmore Hotel on November 1st .
Each secondary school in Cavan had the opportunity to participate in a competition to cook a main course
dish for 4 judges in 40 minutes. Advanced preparation was allowed and foods had to be locally sourced as
much as possible. All food industries/suppliers in Cavan hosted a stand to promote their products.
In preparation of the day, at school we competed amongst each other in groups of 2 and we successfully
won the heat to represent our school at the event.
We investigated local produce, surfed the internet and at last we decided on our nal idea:
Silvercrest chicken wrapped in springroll pastry,
With Corleggi cheese and McCarren bacon stu ng.
Served with a Basil pesto and roasted carrots and parsnips.
On the day, 6 out of 10 schools took part and we were on to compete at 3 o’clock alongside Loretto. The
4 judges were; Maire Du cy, from Bord Bia, Catherine Laydon from Odlams, Annmarie Lacey from the
Cavan institute and the head of the ICA. The dish turned out just as well as we had hoped and we won the
competition! We took photos with the judges , the county manager, Jack Keyes, and the Ear to the Ground
presenter, Ella Mc Sweeny. We were featured on Cavan tv and on Ear to the Ground, and were presented
with a plaque for the prize.

Big thanks to Mr Corley, Ms Points, Mr Lindsey and the chef, Gary O’Hanlon from Viewmont House in
Longford, for their incredible support. We couldn’t have done it without them.
