The school has seen extensive modernisation in recent years. This has enabled the school to grow in numbers while providing the facilities required in a modern school. As the school moves into its fifth century of providing education to the community, it is the intention of the Board, Headmaster and all Staff members to uphold and enhance the school’s reputation in academic excellence as well as educating our students within a Christian ethos.

400th Anniversary Celebrations

Wednesday, October 5th 2011, marked a very significant date in the life of Royal School Cavan. It was on this date in 1611 that John Robinson was appointed as the first Headmaster of the school. A series of events were organised at this time to mark this momentous occasion. A Thanksgiving Service took place in Cavan Parish Church. The Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All-Ireland, Alan Harper OBE, addressed the congregation along with Dr. Harold Hislop, Chief Inspector of the DES and the Junior Minister for Education, Ciaran Cannon.  During this service, a new school crest was unveiled.

Later that month, on October 24th An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, visited our school. He addressed all the students and staff, encouraging the students, in the words of President Barack Obama, to “dream big dreams”.  Members of the Student Council guided An Taoiseach around the school where he had the opportunity to view the students’ work as well as our facilities.

Our School Crest

School Crest

School Crest

The new school crest is quite unique. It was designed by Gavin Arneill and Ruth Lowry (former Sixth Year students). The Griffin (both lion and eagle) is a Royal symbol. The rising sun holds the date 1611, the year Royal School Cavan was established. The sun rises above the drumlins, which are a reference to the landscape of County Cavan.  The Latin phrase ‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ means ‘We prepare for life’.

Boarding

Royal School Cavan is an institution where boarders benefit in many ways.   Each student will gain from the high quality of food provided by the chef, who prepares a menu that is nutritious, healthy and attractive.   Every evening, supervised prep allows each student to work to the best of their ability, enabling them to achieve their academic potential.   The accommodation provided sees each student lodged in areas shared by a few others. This facilitates the development of social skills. It also affords students the opportunity for the required rest to face another busy day.   There is always an acting matron on duty to assist with any student illness which may arise during the day. But above all, each boarder will gain from the type of friendship that lasts a lifetime, provided within the caring ethos of Royal School Cavan.

Extra Curricular Activities

The school prides itself on its participation in, and successes in, various competitions. We have achieved national awards in Art, Science and regional awards in Young Enterprise, Cookery; Art; Irish, to name but a few. Students are also active in fundraising for numerous charities. Those who benefit from this include Concern, Enable Ireland, Age Action Ireland, Childline and Cavan-Monaghan Palliative Care. Fundraising is aimed at fostering a sense of Christian responsibility and social justice in the students.

School Tours

A number of school tours are voluntarily organised by teachers on an annual or bi – annual basis depending on demand. These include language tours to Continental Europe, trips to England and many subject tours within Ireland. The Bronze and Silver Gaisce trips take place annually to adventure centres such as Killary in Co. Mayo.
